Tokens and Markers

Just a quick post of some bits and pieces I've painted up recently, for use in D&D and any other games. They've all been quick painting pieces in between doing other bits (while other things were drying), but should be useful.

Corpse Markers

I was looking for decent corpses to adorn the base of my Green Dragon (WIP blog here and the finished product here), and ended up with a couple extra that I thought might be handy to base up and have for markers. I could imagine using them in D&D to represent a bloody battlefield that the adventurers find, or some poor unfortunate that's been attacked in the woods, kickstarting a quest to find their killer. Or perhaps just as scatter terrain in AOS or Frostgrave. Plenty of possibilities.

Kept these real simple and quick, Contrast paints for fast painting, liberal quantities of Blood for the Blood God paint. I think they're quite effective.

Treasure Markers

I got quite a lot of stuff in Mantic's TerrainCrate kickstarter a few years ago. Some quite nice stuff in there, though it was made of dodgy bendy plastic so some of the pieces aren't so good (tall weapon racks, for example). But these large chunky pieces work really well. Although they can stand on their own, I thought they would look much better on bases with a little bit of sand and grit round them.

Simple painting with Contrast. The gold coins are actually painted silver (Iron Warriors paint) then yellow Contrast over the top - gives quite a nice shiny yellow effect.

Magical Font

For the finale of our current D&D adventure (The Lost Mine of Phandelver), the party were heading for the object of their quest, the magical Forge of Spells. I hadn't really got anything prepared to represent the magical power of the place where items could be imbued with magical properties - I was going to suggest something about holding items aloft in front of some statues that I did have prepared, and say that laser beams from their eyes did it. Or something like that! But then, when buying the corpses that I used above, I got an extra one from Etsy which was a dwarf leaning on a rock. I thought he might look good against a well (like Balin's Tomb), but then figured perhaps he could look good at the base of some steps - potentially protecting whatever was at the top, or desperately trying to reach it before he died.

I had the steps in the bitz box already and the font was from the TerrainCrate stuff, so it was very simple to stick it together and chuck some sand and grit on the base. Very quick and easy, got it finished on the day of the game I think and it added a good bit of atmosphere and gave the players a focus for dipping their swords in to try and make them magical. I've painted it in a way that it could represent a number of things I think, quite a nice looking and versatile piece.
